Students need to feel safe when they come to school. They need to have tools to help them overcome frustrations. At Étude High School, we emphasize the building strong relationships with peers and advisors, we intentionally develop Habits of Mind through academic experiences, and we provide opportunities to practice mindfulness by offering yoga and QiGong. If trust or relationships are broken, we use Restorative Practices to rebuild our community. We are fortunate to have movement classes where students can also participate in an in-depth study of mindfulness and yoga, with a trained instructor in our teacher Molly King.
Each year, King offers a Yoga I seminar for beginners in the fall and a Yoga II seminar for advanced practice in the spring. Students in both classes apply their learning by creating yoga practices for specific populations. Yoga II students always share their practices with friends at Longfellow in the spring.
Longfellow's behavior coach, Amy Verhagen, wanted to implement some mindfulness practices in the beginning of the year hoping to make a positive impact on behaviors and learning right away. Instead of waiting for the Yoga II class, King worked with beginning Yoga I students to bring six different mindfulness practices to the Kindergarten through 3rd graders at Longfellow.
1 - Mindfulness in Yourself -- self-awareness without judgement, observations only
2 - Mindful Buddies -- painting a rock, drawing a happy place, or creating a glitter jar to assist in those moments of frustration... used to calm
3 - Mindful Breathing -- finding time to take deep breaths and understanding the importance to slow down
4 - Encouraging Mindfulness in Others -- taking time to think about the impact mindfulness can have when you help those around you be more observant
5 - Yoga Postures -- teaching calming poses...teaching poses that energize
6 - Movement Breaks -- learning the best practices to release built up energy in a structured way (like WOMMP, Sweet Sixteens, Chair Stretches, etc.)
As Étude Yoga students reflected on the experience they shared growth in areas ranging from lesson planning, speaking in front of a group, and the transformative power of mindfulness for young people. Cassie Grande noted that "teaching anything is so enjoyable, watching someone that doesn't have the knowledge of something and then they have the time to value something that you've been teaching." Sammy Miller shared that she was specifically impressed when "a student was excited to show how he was using [a stuffed] animal to breathe. It showed that he was using mindfulness and I could see that he was wanting to be apart of the group more and more."
King looks forward to bringing Yoga II students back to check in on the Longfellow students' progress in the spring.
This blog is part of a monthly series titled ReBlog sharing out articles that speak to the work we are doing in the schools of The Étude Group. Through these reblogs, we want to connect the work being done here in Sheboygan to the national conversation about education.
SHEBOYGAN - Wednesday, November 8th Human Anatomy and Physiology students of Étude High School held an every-other-year health fair with the focus of informing students, staff, and community members on healthy habits and health education.

There is something to a name. Names have meaning and too often we take them granted without ever exploring their meanings. Nike is the name of a greek god of victory; an appropriate name for a athletic shoe company. Lego stems from the dutch phrase leg godt, which means “play well”. The term Étude was was also selected in order to assign a single word to our educational philosophy.
After we kicked off the school year Tuesday with team building activities, we continued on to Wednesday and Thursday when we focused on experiencing the disciplines students will be immersed in this year. Another focus was for students to get to know the peers in their classes, as well as their teachers on a deeper level. Wednesday, students previewed the different seminar courses followed by choosing which seminars they would like to take during the first trimester. As seen in the photos, these seminars include movement, drama, music, visual art, creative writing, and engineering. Students then participated in their first Town Hall, where the whole school gathered to develop goals for of what our school community envisioned for our weekly town halls. We continued Thursday by giving students a snapshot into each of their academic classes through a 30 minute preview where they learned about their classmates and abstractly explored some of the concepts they will be diving into later on in the year..
Embarking on a new school year can cause different emotions for everyone involved; students, teachers, and parents. Excitement, anxiousness, fear, nerves, are all things that our students had expressed feeling prior to coming to school today. Our goal as Étude Middle School today was to allow students the opportunity explore themselves as well as their relationships with peers, in an effort to provide a learning environment where all students are comfortable this upcoming school year. In addition, we wanted students to see our Habits of Professionalism in action, specifically the habits of communication and collaboration, as these are components that will help students be successful in their futures at school and beyond. Finally, we as a staff wanted to get to know our students better and have experiences with them in a fail safe environment that we could use to reflect upon in the future.
For the 2017-2018 school year, we will be restructuring our Étude High School Math Department in order to provide more personalized learning opportunities for all high school students at all levels of math. We will be utilizing a combination of existing staff expertise and some online tools to offer a range of course options along with in depth exploration of mathematical concepts through projects.
On Monday, August 28th, Étude High School and Middle School welcomed new parents for New Parent Orientation. The event started at 5:30pm, when advisors and families gathered in the cafeteria to enjoy seasonal soups made by our staff. Children were then invited to participate in MAKER Break, while parents got together to learn more about our Advisory program and the role of Advisors as someone who is, to students, "on their case, and on their side."
