Destination Whitewater: Étude students engage in high school creative writing festival
WHITEWATER: November 15th twenty-two Étude High School students ventured from Sheboygan down to the University of Whitewater for the annual UW-Whitewater High School Creative Writing Festival.
For many years Étude has made the trip down to the university with the goal of participating in a greater writing community. The festival offers an opportunity for students from Wisconsin and Illinois to submit their work and be an audience to the work of others through six feedback sessions throughout the day. More than twenty schools and more than four-hundred students attended.
“It’s a lot of people with similar interests coming together, getting to know each other, and being a little uncomfortable reading allowed, sometimes the first time reading something to another person… I was excited to share something I was proud of,” stated junior Alexis Theune, who took home an honorable mention in the category of Multimedia with her "Chicken Out" Project.
“I want to go to this… because it seems like a really fun thing to do as a writer,” senior Caleb Klinzing exclaimed.
Over half the Étude attendees were newcomers, including Klinzing. He, along fellow senior Destiny Montemayor, received first place for their work “Far From the Place” in the Song Lyrics category. Many others including a group of three freshmen, four dancers, and another senior enjoyed their first visit, bring new voices to sessions to which they went.
The feedback portion was the focal point of the day. “Being around people that could give me feedback on my writing was really nice… they knew what they were talking about,” shared freshman Amber Knaub. “The [facilitator] gave me an entire page of feedback of what I should change and what I should keep.”
“I was nervous, all the college kids are gonna freak me out, I’m gonna get lost… after awhile I got used to it, I understood…” Knaub also claimed.
While awards may not be the focus of the day, Étude has had a strong history of taking home victories with this year being no exception.

Many of the festival’s Étude attendees participated in Whitewater Open Mic Fundraiser in October of this year. The event saw students and community members from around Sheboygan sharing their work, poetry, prose, dramatic readings, and music. Raising over $100 to subsidize the cost of registration of the festival, Sheboygan has not seen its last of Étude’s creative minds raising funds.
“I don’t get the chance to share my work [in public],” said Knaub in regards to the opportunities that the fundraiser offered to her.
Every year students are able to walk away from the festival with a new perspective on writing and a writing community.
“It’s okay to submit something that your not one-hundred okay with… It’s a really good experience to get your writing out there... people you don’t know… get the college experience because it can be a scary… place... Go to Whitewater,” Thuene stated.
Etude students travel to colleges across the state throughout the year none of those tours events fully immerse students in the college campus experience. Being on the UW-Whitewater campus provided students the opportunity to explore a college campus and interact with college students.

Étude High Brings Mindfulness to Longfellow's PBIS
Students need to feel safe when they come to school. They need to have tools to help them overcome frustrations. At Étude High School, we emphasize the building strong relationships with peers and advisors, we intentionally develop Habits of Mind through academic experiences, and we provide opportunities to practice mindfulness by offering yoga and QiGong. If trust or relationships are broken, we use Restorative Practices to rebuild our community. We are fortunate to have movement classes where students can also participate in an in-depth study of mindfulness and yoga, with a trained instructor in our teacher Molly King.

Étude students advocate healthy habits at biennial health fair
SHEBOYGAN - Wednesday, November 8th Human Anatomy and Physiology students of Étude High School held an every-other-year health fair with the focus of informing students, staff, and community members on healthy habits and health education.

Étude Group Students present their learning and creations at the Milwaukee Maker Faire
Over the September 23rd-24th weekend students from both the middle and high schools presented animations, literature, 3D-printing, and held their own rock painting workshops for thousands...
New Parent Orientation
On Monday, August 28th, Étude High School and Middle School welcomed new parents for New Parent Orientation. The event started at 5:30pm, when advisors and families gathered in the cafeteria to enjoy seasonal soups made by our staff. Children were then invited to participate in MAKER Break, while parents got together to learn more about our Advisory program and the role of Advisors as someone who is, to students, "on their case, and on their side."

LTC offers IDEAS sophomores some Career Connections
The scent of curiosity loomed in the air, the eagerness of students was near palpable. Myself along with a crowd of other students arrived for the April 11 fieldtrip early, awaiting what educational opportunities this morning would bring us. This intrigue would carry our group of thirty-some sophomores to the photo-lined corridors of Lakeshore Technical College.

IDEAS Students attend conference for The Tempest
The Issues and Ethics class travelled to UW-Madison to attend the Great World Texts[http://humanities.wisc.edu/public-humanities/gwt/about-gwt/] conference on Monday, April 3. This year, students around Wisconsin read William Shakespeare’s The Tempest and created projects to focus on a specific thematic lens within the book. Students attended plenary sessions in which one group from each school presented their project in front of the entire conference group, a Q&A with keynote speaker Margaret Atwood, and two gallery walks compiled of the creations of all of the participating schools.

IDEAS Student Receives Honorable Mention

IDEAS has a volunteer culture
During Exhibitions of Learning (EoLs) at IDEAS Academy, a group of dedicated students volunteer their time to keep everything running smoothly and efficiently. Volunteer positions include curating the gallery for gallery walks, timing presentations, ushering at Jake’s Cafe, managing sound equipment, and introducing presenters.

IDEAS students spread kindness before the holidays
The IDEAS Academy class of 2017 along with facilitator Karen Robison developed a calendar for the month of December with daily prompts for students to complete in order to spread kindness throughout the school before winter vacation.

Shadow Day
IDEAS Academy will be hosting a Shadow Day on February 2nd. Shadow day is designed to give students an opportunity to explore the many opportunities offered at I.D.E.A.S. Academy. The morning begins with a team building activity, followed by attending classes and ends with a question and answer session.
