Since starting Wilco in 1994 Tweedy has written original songs for nine Wilco albums and collaborated with folk singer Billy Bragg to bring musical life to three albums-full of Woody Guthrie-penned lyrics in the Mermaid Avenue series. Wilco’s latest release, Star Wars, is a 2016 Grammy nominee for Best Alternative Album. In 2014 Tweedy released Sukierae, a musical collaboration with his 18-year-old son and drummer Spencer Tweedy.
ABOUT THE ETUDE SESSIONS
As a fundraiser for The Étude Group schools, the Étude Sessions supports students’ learning through transformative experiences in the arts and academics that would not otherwise be available to students in a public school. The funds from the 2014-2015 season helped students envision their professional lives beyond of high school through participation in creative writing festivals and campus visits eight different colleges in Wisconsin. A portion of the funds also helped in sending students on a service-learning trip to Nicaragua in June. Our intention is to make these experiences accessible to all students in our schools, 80% of whom are first generation college students and over 50% of whom qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Our vision for growth through Étude Sessions includes expanding our College Readiness, International Travel, and Artist in Residence programs as well as providing professional assets to a diverse range of student-driven projects. For example, legal advice for an engineering student seeking a patent or environmental consulting for a first grade class installing and monitoring a garden to help monarch migration. These interactions with professionals help make projects more authentic and they give students insight into how to think as professionals do. These relationships also create opportunities.
